So if a majority of the full time compensated contributors as well as community members publicly state that they don’t or haven’t seen this and that it isn’t a problem, it will continue to run its course and it will do as it will. At this point I have done what I can. And for that I have received the circle the wagons treatment and those I was looking to help have made it a point to help load the rifles in a bazaar reality that I was coming to get them (fear?)
As stated by @pastaghost this is a very difficult subject to approach and the timing was not in my favor, but as no one was talking about it I raised my voice as I always have when I have the energy to do so. I wish someone else had, I wish that more came out of the last time I raised this over half a year ago. But it didn’t, I regret that with the uncomfortableness with the topic many don’t want to share their experiences with this and I have to use examples that I have knowledge of, because I can only speak on that, even though I see it happening and can spot the trend, beyond that those situations are not mine to share.
Driving people away because they don’t agree with your way of doing something or even question actions has and does happen within this community, sorry if it is inconvenient to acknowledge this and even more to deal with it. This is a sign of inexperienced, immaturity, and poor management capability, shame that it hurts feelings.
So let’s do a hypothetical management exercise!
I as your team lead was hanging with you a few weeks back with a larger group of like individuals talking about the future, how we have what we need to dig in and do something great, I double down even talking of future team gatherings as a means to continue to build team bonds.
Monday I come in and start the conversation off with. I have had to spend some of my own money to cash my check twice now and it hurts. I am going to ask for a way to get more so this doesn’t happen anymore. You say that sucks. I move on with a new topic, hey I know this person. We had a great conversation. I think that they can add value to our team, what are your thoughts and can you show them the ropes and support this effort. You agree you’re a team player and willing to give others a fair shot. We are better working together right?
A few days later this same week I come back to you and another team member after maybe seeing you talking to that new person presumably helping them as asked. And I start the conversation off, you know what, people have approached me saying why would I bring someone on my team at this point and spend more money, and questioning what I am doing. And I state that I don’t have the answers to defend my position of hiring someone. What do you team members think? You say to me, you are the leader of this team, don’t let others influence what is best for you and your ability to do the job. The determination should be up to you. The other person in the room say’s (they like brevity) Fuck’em if it effects the team oh well. As a leader I don’t point out that shouldn’t be the mentality we promote as a group, I just say thanks and leave.
Later that day we have a meeting and some other teams are presenting the possibility of hiring new people while saving money, and they are met with the instant and loud voices of this isn’t the time we need to save more, why would you need anyone else? This happens to two different teams looking for budget renewal and I am sitting there eyes wide open knowing my budget renewal is next.
The next day I call you in and say, I don’t think that we as a team can get through this next budget cycle without offering up some people, we have skirted by so far but we have to do our share. Sorry, wish it was different but hard times and decisions. At this time I give no narrative of testing has gotten slower, your performance has been lacking, or I have been noticing a decline in need.
Ok in the hypothetical exercise,
As a leader was I making sound logical team determinations? What could I have done differently?
Did it seem as though emotion and fear played a large factor in how I came to these very fast and divergent behaviors? How could I better ensure that I am making logical, merit based determinations.
As a leader did it seem like I did my diligence beforehand or had to fill it in after the fact? What steps in advance could have been taken to resolve or even prevent it reaching this point?
This can be used as a leadership exercise, stretching the body is great, I think the DAO needs more stretching of the mind right now. Do I believe anyone will do this honestly or to help the community? No
